Parenting Without Your Parents: When Your Family Doesn't Support Your Choice
Making the decision to parent an unexpected pregnancy is brave. You likely spent days or weeks weighing your options, looking at your values, and deciding that you wanted to be a mother.
But what happens when the people you love most don't agree with you?
For many young women, the excitement of choosing life for their baby is crushed by the reaction of their own parents. Hearing phrases like "You're ruining your life" or "We won't help you" is devastating. It can make you feel small, foolish, and incredibly alone.
At Crossroads Resource Center, we want you to know this: Your ability to be a good mother is not determined by your parents' approval. You can do this, even if you have to do it without them.
Allow Yourself to Grieve the Loss
It is okay to be sad. When you envisioned having a baby, you probably pictured your mom planning the baby shower or your dad proudly holding his grandchild. Losing that vision is a legitimate loss.
Give yourself permission to cry and feel that disappointment. However, try not to let their fear become your reality. Often, a parent’s negative reaction comes from a place of shock or fear for your future. While that doesn't make their words hurt less, understanding it can help you not take it as a reflection of your worth as a mother.
Building Your New Village
You have heard the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child." If your biological family has resigned from the village, it is time to recruit new members.
Family isn't just about blood; it is about who shows up. Look around you.
- Is there a supportive partner or the partner's family?
- Do you have friends, a church community, or mentors?
- Are there other moms who can understand what you are going through?
Surround yourself with voices that say "You can" to drown out the voices that say "You can't."
Getting Practical About Resources
If your parents are withdrawing financial support, the fear of "how will I afford this?" is very real. You need a practical game plan to replace that safety net.
- Government Assistance: Programs like WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) and SNAP are designed exactly for this purpose—to help women and children get healthy food. There is no shame in utilizing these temporary stepping stones.
- Material Support: This is where we come in. You don't need to buy everything at a department store. Through our "Earn While You Learn" program, you can earn credits for diapers, clothes, car seats, and cribs just by taking classes.
Setting Boundaries for Your Mental Health
If your interactions with your parents are filled with guilt-tripping or toxicity, you may need to love them from a distance for a while.
According to Psychology Today, boundaries are essential for healthy relationships. This applies to parents, too. It is okay to say, "I understand you are upset, but I have made my decision. I need us to either talk about something else or I need to hang up."
Protecting your peace is part of protecting your baby.
