What is an ultrasound?

An Obstetrical ultrasound is an imaging procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves that can be seen on a screen. This is a non-surgical procedure that can determine fetal heartbeat and determine how many weeks pregnant you are. In addition, ultrasounds can help expose the chance that you may miscarry or have an ectopic pregnancy. It is important to identify any risk of ectopic pregnancy right away as it can be life-threatening.

Why do I need an ultrasound?

Having an ultrasound provides you with very important information regarding your pregnancy. It helps to confirm a pregnancy and to determine whether or not it is viable by hearing a heartbeat. If no heartbeat is detected there is a chance that you may miscarry naturally. In addition, the ultrasound can determine how far along you are in the pregnancy and whether or not the pregnancy is in the uterus or if there is a chance of an ectopic pregnancy.
